Bristol Baseball Round Up 6th July 16

BADGERS COMEBACK SINKS MARINERS

Bristol Badgers came from behind to beat Plymouth Mariners 29-7 in their SWBL (South West Baseball League) fixture at Failand on Sunday 3rd July.

Trailing 6-0 after the third inning, the Badgers hit back in the fourth scoring five runs. The Bristol team quickly struck again, racking up 18 runs in one inning while restricting the Mariners through solid defence which included a double play.

Catcher Rhodri Theaker was the Badgers’ MVP for his great defensive display as well as driving in three runs. Nils Eliasson and Aaron Thomas also had strong days with the bat.

“The team showed a lot of character and skill to come back from the six run deficit, ” said Tom Hollies who struck out 12 Plymouth batters during the match. “Rhodri had a fantastic game behind the plate and it was good to see we were tighter in the field, something we have been working on over the recent weeks.”

Next up for the Badgers is the second derby against the Bristol Bats on Sunday 17th July at 12noon at Failand. The Bats won the first match 18-4 and both teams will be looking forward to the rematch.

On Sunday 10th July, players from both Bristol teams will be taking part in the Futures Tournament in Plymouth for a tournament involving all clubs in the SWBL.

BRISTOL BATS PUSH CHAMPIONS ALL THE WAY

Bristol Bats pushed reigning champions Taunton Muskets all the way on Sunday 26th June in their SWBL (South West Baseball League) fixture before going down 12-5 after nine innings.

Trailing 9-2 in the 7th inning, the Bats responded with three runs to give them hope but the Muskets hit back with three runs of their own including a home run from José Bobadilla in the bottom of the 8th to seal the win.

The game featured two excellent pitching performances. The Bats’ Chris Blandford pitched a complete game while the Muskets’ star Miguel Peralta was as difficult to hit as ever, although the Bats put bat on ball far better than the Muskets might be used to. Outfielder Rich Green (pictured) was MVP for the Bats, scoring two runs as a result of excellent base-running and taking a running catch at a crucial point in the game.

“Despite the result, the team played extremely well in all facets of the game including a much tighter defensive performance,” said team manager Ricky Gellatly. “We always knew it was going to be tough against the best pitcher in the league but we were able to get bat on ball and have now scored six of the seven runs that the Muskets have conceded this season.”

The Badgers’ scheduled game against the Newton Abbot Brewers was forfeited by the Brewers, who were unable to make the trip.
