BADGERS OVERWHELM BATS IN BASEBALL DERBY
On Sunday 14th May the Bristol Badgers overwhelmed the Bristol Bats 18-2 in the first derby match of the 2017 SWBL (South West Baseball League) season.
After scoring first, and despite the Bats keeping it tight early, runs flowed freely in the 5th and 6th innings giving the Badgers an unassailable lead.
The Badgers game was built around an MVP performance from short stop Nils Eliasson who had three hits including a double, three RBIs and was involved in one of the two double plays.
The Badgers also benefitted from a strong pitching performance from Deivydas Trinkunas and a lack of errors while the Bats suffered from the late withdrawal of their scheduled starting pitcher, Ben Smith, due to injury.
“It was a good performance from us on the day and gives us hope going forward,” said Tom Hollies, the manager of the victorious Badgers. “There was great pitching, 10 stolen bases and we made only one error in the field.”
For the Bats, it was a big disappointment after their victory over the Taunton Muskets the previous Sunday. Ashley Pooley was awarded the team’s MVP for some sterling defensive work in left field and a solid performance with the bat including a double to centre field.
“We are disappointed that we couldn’t carry on our level of performance from the previous week,” said Bats manager Billy Vickery. “The Badgers were just too strong for us on the day but we will be working hard to improve for our next game.”

A grand slam home run by Rich Green drove the Bristol Bats to a 30-2 victory over the Taunton Musketeers on Sunday 21st May.

With the Bats leading 8-2 after four innings, MVP Green ignited a 13 run sixth inning for the Bristol team with his first ever grand slam.

It was a excellent overall performance from Green who also pitched five strong innings, giving up just two runs while striking out five Musketeers. He also drove in six runs and stole six bases.

The Bats finished off the game with a rare triple play which started with an excellent catch in the outfield by team manager Billy Vickery.

Newcomer Ashley Pooley continued to impress with his performance at the plate.  He got a hit every time he was up at bat and fielded well at third base.

“It was important that we responded after the loss to the Badgers,” said Billy Vickery. “I am delighted we didn’t commit any errors in the field and the offensively the whole team made strong contributions.”

Bristol Badgers were due to play the Taunton Muskets at Somerdale Pavilion but the game had to be rearranged and will now take place later in the year.

Early reports on Twitter is that Bristol Bats have secured a 17-0 win at home against Newton Brewers, whilst there is no score (at time of writing) for the Badgers game away at Plymouth.

Apologies for not getting these reports out sooner but this website is a hobby for me and other things have unfortunately got in the way for the past month.
