Keynsham vs Wincanton Nov 2018

Keynsham 2-1 Wincanton
Western League Div One
AJN Stadium
10/11/18

Keynsham maintain their fine form after a slow start to their league campaign this season. Mike Grist gave the home side the lead before Toby Cole equalised in the second half. However Matt Brown soon guided home the winner for the hosts; on his 100th appearance for the Ks.

In the first ten minutes it was Wincanton who went close with a fierce shot hitting the inside of the post and bouncing clear. The visitors could have been 2-0 up inside 14 minutes as 9 played through Toby Cole who forces a good parry from Ash Clark; with the ball being cleared off the line.

Five minutes later it was Keynsham’s turn to hit the wood work. Harley Purnell floats in a corner to the back post with James Ollis waiting expectantly, but his strike hits the bar. The young Bath City loanee was a constant attacking threat with neat interchanges in midfield.

Mike Grist had a header well saved just before the half hour mark from another Purnell corner. At the other end Clark was called into action again with a one on one save with his feet to keep the score at 0-0.

Then the break through came on the 38th minute with another chance from a Purnell corner. This time Grist’s header was made to count as he got free of his marker to head home for Keynsham.

There was still time for Adrian Harvey and Matt Brown to go close before half time as Keynsham ended the stronger of the two sides.

Action from Purnell’s freekick in the second half

In the second half Keynsham picked up on where they left off. It was Purnell who had the opportunities to strike this time, the first coming just eight minutes after the restart. Craig Wilson lays the ball off to the advanced midfielder, with the Wincanton number one doing well to save.

The tireless energy of Purnell created his own chance on 71 minutes. He burst through the middle of the park, as Wincanton looked it play it out from the back, winning the ball and forcing a superb one handed save. Brown then had another good opportunity around five minutes later. The ball was crossed in from the left with Harvey chesting the ball down to Brown who hits the ball on the turn but it sails just wide.

However Wincanton still looked dangerous coming forward and on 78 minutes they were level. A thrown in on the right found their striker in the box, who turns and gets a shot away. The ball was blocked and rebounded into the path of Cole who fires home through a tightly packed penalty area.

This sparked a reaction from John Allen’s Keynsham side and it only took four minutes to take the lead again. A Wincanton corner was cleared up to half way where Ollis picks it up. He finds Purnell on the left who gets the space to drill the ball into the box, where Brown gets a touch to guide ball inside the far post on his 100th game for the club.

The hosts finished the game with real attacking intent with Ollis and substitute Matt Curnock both testing the keeper.

Best of luck to both teams for the rest of the season.
