ATFC Ladies could make history May 2015

Aber Ladies hoping to make it 3 from 3

Aberystwyth Ladies take on Llanfyllin Ladies at Latham Park, in Newtown, on Sunday 24th May in the CWFA Ladies Cup Final. They will be hoping to lift the cup for the 3rd year in a row to make history for the club.

The Central Wales Football Association cup is an important competition to do well in for Aberystwyth as it helps to attract the better players in the area to the club. They have managed to successfully retain it last season but a win on Sunday will create history for the club.

Under the new management of Morgan Evans and coach Bryn Oliver they have given a lot of young players a chance this season. The duo took over the team in the summer of 2014 after departures of long serving players after Ray Hughes stepped down.

“I must say, myself and the other staff involved with the ladies are so impressed with all of them, but more so the younger girls as they’ve not been scared to take on this challenge this season. We’ve trained slightly harder leading up to this final, and I can’t fault the commitment of most of the younger girls as they are making a two hour  round trip each time we train and that’s twice a week at the moment.” Says coach Byrn.

He was also quick to heap praise of those more senior players that stuck with the club after their surprise reinstatement to the Women’s Welsh Premier League at the start of the 2014/15 season.

“Our more senior heads such as Ffiona (captain Ffiona Evans) and Landy’ (Stephanie Land) have been in this final before and their experience of being in a final will be crucial. The manager Morgan Evans is obviously another vital part of this jigsaw, and as we will be playing on Latham Park he will want the girls to be playing football on that surface.”

It hasn’t been an easy season for the Ladies but they will be hoping that some of the increasingly noisy ‘Green Army’ will make their way to Newtown this Sunday to see the team lift the cup.

“We have a great bunch and they are ‘buzzing’ for this final, these players want to be at this level (of WPL) and have proved in games that we are that standard.”

Kick-off is at 2.30pm and entry is just £3 adults and a £1 for children.
