Big September for Phillips

Phillips looks to the future

Welsh Table tennis player Megan Phillips was the losing finalist in the Liverpool GP at the beginning of the month, but she is firmly looking at the future. She flies out to Germany next month to begin her pre-season training with her Bundesliga club competing in the 3rd division and has the European Championships at the end of September.

“From September, I will be playing matches for my German club in the 3rd Bundesliga, so I’m excited to play matches against new opponents, as well as continuing to compete in Grand Prix events in the UK” says Megan.

This is a welcomed comment to see young British players wanting to come back to play in the English GP’s. English Table Tennis is going through an exciting period of rebranding following the success of the English men’s team and the success of all the British teams in the Commonwealth Games. The prize money is slowing rising along with being equal amounts in Men’s and Women’s competitions in all the GPs this season.

“There was a strong contingent of young Welsh players at Liverpool Grand Prix, and from what I saw of their games, it’s especially encouraging to see some young girls coming through.” Megan was also impressed with the GPs overall and see them as an essential part of this new generation’s development. “Grand Prixs are a great place for them to gain experience and hopefully they’ll keep playing events in the UK so they can keep making the improvements that they are at the moment”.

Megan also managed to put on a great display at the competition on the way to final by beating the top seed Karina Le Fevre. “I felt I definitely played one of the best games I’ve played in a while. She’s a tough opponent and I’d never beaten her before. So before the game I knew I had to be as attacking as possible” said Megan.

Best of luck to Megan in her domestic season and in the European Championships coming up!

Next up is the European Championships and you can follow her progress along with the other young British players at the European site.

Megan and her twin sister Angharad write a regular blog about their table tennis, it’s an excellent read giving a good insight into the life of a professional table tennis player.
