Crockett’s Corner
Aug Review 2014

Three matches in is probably a little early to start assessing the season so far, but overall I feel we at Aberystwyth Town can be fairly content with our progress in the Corbett Sports Welsh Premier League so far.

Like last year, we started our season away to the promoted North Wales Cymru Alliance Champions, and a 5-0 win at Cefn Druids was a great statement of intent. Within the Club many people feel that last season the team was much better than its seventh place finish suggested, as a savage 3 point punishment for an administrative error prevented us from our rightful place in the Top Six, so we aim to prove that beyond all doubt in 2014/5.

Three days later we hosted the Champions TNS, who had beaten us in our last three meetings by an aggregate score of 13-4, so when The Saints needed a deflected 80th minute equaliser to grab a point that also showed good progress.

Most people within the WPL would pick out Bangor City as natural rivals for Aberystwyth Town, and the Citizens don’t often lose three League games in a row, so when they found themselves 2-0 down at Half Time last Friday, a huge fightback was on the cards. That wind-assisted fightback swept Bangor into a 3-2 lead, but Town scored a characteristic late goal, via a penalty from Chris Venables (his sixth in three League games), to save a point and a place in the Top Three as things stand in the Table.

Attendances are up on last season, currently standing at 413, and the Club is planning a suite of Promotional Events throughout the Autumn and Winter to ensure we tap into potential fan bases such as University Students, Schoolchildren, Families and to commemorate World War I.

As a Club Director, what pleases me is the impression that everyone at the Club is pulling the same way and working very hard to ensure our Players and Management have a positive environment in which they can flourish. After a Welsh Cup Final and Europa League matches in recent months there is a Feel-good Factor at Park Avenue you can almost touch.

It’s a great time to visit Park Avenue!
