Wayne’s Rovers
Feb 2015 – winning

Top of the League!

Since my last blog post Rovers have played and won 3 games, beating promotion rivals Grimsby at their place and securing 2 home victories – one against Altrincham and one against Braintree.

Editor – and also a 1-0 away win against Gateshead

The game up at Grimsby finished 1-0 to Rovers with the only goal of the game coming from Welshman Tom Lockyer’s well placed strike. This goal was much needed after Matt Taylor hit the post from the penalty spot, stalling our lead. Regardless, we left with a great 3 points away from home against a decent side who are also chasing promotion.

Next up for Rovers was a home game against Altrincham.

It was a bit of a scrappy game, and to be honest Altrincham looked good in places. Rovers started the first 5 minutes lively and the ever impressive Adam Dawson looked dangerous every time he had the ball at his feet. Matty Taylor was played in and took it around the keeper and from a tight angle put it wide – he should have probably done better with that chance. Rovers took the lead thanks to Tom Parkes meeting a corner ball from Adam Dawson.

At half time it was 1-0 to Rovers and the news was going around the Mem that Barnet were loosing to Grimsby. However Rovers didn’t seem to pick up much momentum in the second half and just couldn’t really get going. A few balls forward were miss placed and a few dodgy decisions from the officials seemed to be winding everyone up.

I don’t normally write about the officials but the ref and linesmen were rubbish! Blatant fouls right in front of the ref weren’t picked up.

We then heard that Barnet then equalised – it’s amazing how quickly we can find out what’s going on at other grounds across the country. Rovers worked hard but couldn’t find the second goal that would have killed off the game and calmed the crowd down.

On the 90th minute the chant ‘There’s only one Craig Disley’ rang out around the Mem. He had just put Grimsby 2-1 up against Barnet! The game ended up 1-0 to Rovers, and Barnet losing meant we were 1 point behind them!

Tuesday’s game against Braintree would be even more important. With Barnet not playing, a win for Rovers could put us top.

Tom Parkes and Mark Mchrystal were solid at the back, and goal scorer Tom gets my man of the match.

I was working in London I was unable to get back to game, but was following the game on Twitter, constantly refreshing the feed in hope of a goal for Rovers! As I refreshed I saw Goooooalllll and leapt up to celebrate! Matty Taylor had given Rovers the lead from the spot after a Braintree player brought him down in the box and saw red.

I thought we could have gone and scored another 3 or 4, but then Rovers don’t seem to play well against ten men!

Next time I refreshed it was 1-1! I couldn’t believe it! I have just watched the Braintree goal and wow, it was some goal! If you haven’t seen it check it out! With ten minutes to go I was starting to think maybe we had blown the chance to go top, but next time I checked I read Goooalll! Ellis Harrison had put Rovers ahead, linking up well with Matty Taylor and finishing well.

The game ended 2-1 to Rovers, and we are top of the league.

There are just ten games to go we are in a great position to stay at the top and go back up at the first attempt. We’ve still got Jermaine Easter to come back in the side, and I don’t think we have seen the best of him. If he can come back in all guns blazing this will be a great boost for the team. Also Stuart Sinclair will hopefully be back soon too – we have missed his energy and non stop running in the middle of the park.

Come on Rovers!
