Weekend Preview: 18th-19th Oct ’14

Weekend Bath based Preview
18th-19th October 2014

By Mark Tanner

Following their FA Cup replay triumph over Shortwood United in the week Bath City have strengthened by bringing in Pierce Mitchell on a month’s loan from Bristol Rovers. The 18 year old will come straight into the match day squad and will be match ready following a previous loan spell this season with rivals Weston Super Mare. So he will travel with his new team mates to Bromley this Saturday in a 3pm ko.

Bromley have made a solid start to the season winning 5 of their 11 games and currently sit in 5th place. It’ll be a real test for Lee Howells to see how far his improving Bath side have come in the recent weeks and he will be pleased that Nick McCootie and Andy Watkins were on the score sheet in their 3-1 win on Tuesday. The front 3 with David Pratt should provide a real handful for any defence in this league if they can all keep fit.

Bristol Rovers have a non league local derby to contend with when a strong Forest Green Rovers side travel the short distance to Bristol on Saturday for a 3pm ko. Many of the Rovers faithful will be banking on 3 easy points here but over the last 4 games against 3 of the lesser sides in the league they have only managed 6 points but remain unbeaten. Andy Monkhouse found his scoring touch again in their last outing with a 2-2 draw at Aldershot and will be vital to the Gas as they look to keep pace with the early front runners in the Conference Premier.

Larkhall will be hoping that any Bath City fans not travelling to Bromley will want to see Shortwood United for a third time this week as they host them on Saturday 3pm ko in the FA Trophy. Larkhall’s great start to the season continues as they saw off Cheddar 5-1 in the Somerset Premier Cup in midweek. The Somerset Premier Cup is a competition they could go all the way in this season and it keeps the confidence up by winning more games. Their league form has also improved with the Larks noticing up another big win over Fleet Town last weekend away 6-1, so if you want to see goals get down to Plain Ham this weekend.

Odd Down make the short trip over to Brislington this Saturday at 3pm. They narrowly lost to a strong Bradford side 2-1 at home in their last league game but will look to improve against their local rivals. Corey Simpson was the goal scorer last weekend and he will need his teams mates to keep creating chances for him this weekend.

Keynsham Town are still looking to move up and away from the bottom few in the league after just 1 point from the 6 points on offer since last Saturday. They drew 2-2 away at Welton Rovers last weekend with Morgan and Ben Stiff getting the goals, but then went down 2-1 at home on Tuesday night against Chippenham Park; Box with their only goal. Their attentions now turn to the Les Phillips Cup when they take on Barnstaple Town at home this Saturday 3pm ko. This will be another stern test for Chris King as he looks to pick up his young side and go again against well supported opposition from Devon.

Bath Rugby take the long trip up north to Scotland as they compete in the European Champions Cup against Glasgow Warriors on Saturday 3.15 ko. This game will be live on TV across the city center as Bath look to go on another historic cup run. However they will need to pick themselves up from a narrow away defeat to WASPS in the league last weekend.

————————————————————————————————————

There will be plenty of rugby this weekend for Bathonians as both Avon Rugby sides are at home, against Old Bristolians and Bristol Barbarians. The first team will look to get back to winning ways on Saturday at 3pm after their away defeat to Cheltenham, whilst the 2nd will look to build on their big 42-22 win over Keynsham last weekend. So if you’re not travelling to Scotland then come on down to Hicksfield and see some good quality club rugby at this friendly volunteer run club.

————————————————————————————————————

Finally Bath Futsal Club will take on Oxford Futsal in a 2pm ko on Sunday 19th in the National League Div 2. This will give new manager Billy Whittaker a chance to see his team apply his first week of training methods to a competitive game. The club are still looking for their first win of the season to climb the table and welcome any support down at Hayesfield School. So come on down and see some high quality Futsal and see why this sport is growing in the UK at the moment.

Hope you’ve enjoyed this weekend preview, is your team or sport covered? If not then why not? Get in touch and help promote your local club.
