Bristol Baseball Round up May 2016

Two weeks have passed since we last updated you on the fortunes of our two Bristol Baseball clubs.

Bats Cull Badgers In Local Baseball Derby

The Bristol Bats overwhelmed the Bristol Badgers 18-4 in the SWBL derby fixture on Sunday 15th May. The victory was built on a strong all round team performance at the plate and in the field and an excellent pitching performance by MVP Chris Blandford.

After a nervous start, Blandford settled down and pitched a complete game, striking out 14 Badgers over the course of a sun kissed afternoon at Failand. Rich Green, Dan Looney and Billy Vickery all had good games with the bat scoring eight runs between them.

“It was a marvellous performance by the whole team and we were able to support Chris’s outstanding pitching by scoring plenty of runs and keeping it tight in the field,” said Bats manager Ricky Gellatly.

The Badgers were hampered by an injury to leading player Tom Hollies in the second inning which sidelined him for the rest of the game. His team mates were unable to break free of the Bats defensive efforts after the first inning in which they scored three runs.

“The Bats simply outplayed us all afternoon. We just couldn’t keep their batters quiet or deal with some excellent pitching,” said Tom Hollies after the game. “Kevin Webb and Simon Frankcom made their Badger debuts and they acquitted themselves pretty well against a strong Bats team.”

The rematch will take place on Sunday 17th July 2016.

Crucial fielding errors cost Bats against Muskets

Crucial errors in the field cost the Bristol Bats heavily as they went down 19-1 to reigning champions Taunton Muskets in their SWBL (South West baseball League) on Sunday 22nd May.

Despite a tight start, the errors and an excellent performance by the Muskets star pitcher Miguel Peralta meant that the Bristol side were always chasing the game.

“We always knew that tight fielding was key if we were to overcome a strong Muskets side,” said Bats manager Ricky Gellatly. “Whilst we made some excellent plays, we also committed some errors at crucial times, which was doubly disappointing because we were getting the bat on the ball against the league’s top pitcher.”

James Bigwood had a good day in the field making three outstanding plays and was the Bats MVP.

The two Bristol teams now have a break in the SWBL schedule. The Bristol Badgers resume their campaign away to the Taunton Musketoons on Sunday 5th June, while the Bristol Bats return on Sunday 12th June at home also to the Musketoons.
