McPing crowned champions
Battle of the Paddle
Bristol Summer Series
McPing, representing McCann advertising, beat reigning champions BAPS (Clik Ltd) in the third and final set in a very competitive final at The Cuban on 30th September. This was the last event of a summer long social table tennis competition – Battle of the Paddle.
Battle of the Paddle is a competition dreamt up and run by Dylan Pepler and James Strickland back in 2014. It’s a way of bringing together Bristol based businesses to have a game of table tennis after work in a lunch hour.
This year saw 28 teams enter from a wide range of different industries. Age and skill levels varied and games could be arranged privately anywhere around the city; indoor or outdoor. There were also set game nights at a number of different bars and restaurants after work which proved very popular with players.
The event at The Cuban on Wednesday 30th September was the last in the summer series. Unlike the other events this was a straight knock out for the top 16 teams. The biggest surprise of the night with The Age of Umpires finishing in 3rd place after a 10th place league finish. The semi finals and finals of the night were closely contested affairs with some great table tennis being played.
Prizes on the night were donated by local businesses going to the first and second placed teams. There was also a prize draw for the losing teams too just before the main event. It was worth sticking around until the end as now the M Tanner Sports team will never be without phone battery again; thanks to Blackstar Solutions.
The standard has been getting better over the past year and Dylan and James will be running a winter league for 2015/16. It’s a great series of events to get involved with and a chance to see a lot of different venues in Bristol and meet like minded people.
Table tennis is a very underrated sport but with the chance to socialise and network for your business Battle of the Paddle is creating a more relaxed setting for the sport. Dylan and James have also won over the support of Table Tennis England & Ping; who provided all of the tables and equipment with local council backing.
So if your business would like to be represented then get in touch with Battle of the Paddle and follow them on Twitter to keep up to date.
Here is a list of all of the games played, with scores, up until the last 16 night.
