Weekend Preview 27th/28th Feb 2016

Weekend Preview
Bath based
Sat 27th – Sun 28th Feb 2016

We take a look at this weekend’s fixtures for our Bath based teams. There is another action packed weekend of sport to watch and play so lets take a look at one you can play first:

Dodgeball

Bath Spartan Dodgeball Club run their weekly training sessions every Saturday morning at 11am-12.30. It’s a great chance to keep fit whilst having fun in this growing sport. The dodgeball world cup is being held in Manchester in April so interest in the UK is at an all time high so get down and see what all the fuss is about.

The session is excellent value at just £2 for an hour and a half and is held at Hayesfield Girls School in Oldfield Park. There are games against both University teams coming up along with a grudge match against Bristol if you’re looking for a bit more competition. So make sure you improve your skills now as new players are always welcome.

Football

Larkhall Athletic host North Leigh in a Southern League Div One clash this Saturday, ko 3pm. It’ll be their first league game up at Plain Ham since Wimbourne on the 23rd Jan after an extremely wet start to the month. The enforced rest period has the done the Larks the world of good after a pointless January. Wayne Thorne’s side have beaten Mangotsfield away 2-1 in the league and progressed to the next round of the Somerset Premier Cup so far this month.

Bridgwater were the opponents on Tuesday night as the Larks booked their place in the semi finals for the first time in their history. Jamie Lyons was the man of the match scoring both of the goals in a 2-0 win and Thorne will be hoping for another solid performance this Saturday.

Gary Owers Bath City side are on the road this weekend as the Romans travel to Hemel Hempstead in the Conference South. There has been an immediate improvement in results since Owers took over at the beginning of the month with 5 points from 3 games. However he knows that his side will need to keep picking up wins as we reach the business end of the season.

Bath sit just 4 points off the final relegation place and are amongst 10 teams who could end up relegated come the end of the season. Hemel fair a little better with two more points and a game in hand over Bath so a win would go a long way in easing some fears for supporters.

Odd Down are hoping they can sprint their way to the title this season. Ray Johnson’s men have opened up a 5 point gap at the top of the Western Premier League and have a game in hand over promotion favourites Bristol Manor Farm; who are still competing in the FA Vase. Odd Down travel to Melksham Town in a tough fixture, with Odd Down winning 1-0 at home earlier in the season.

Chris King’s much improved Keynsham side travel to Wincanton Town this Saturday. The wheels have come off their unlikely title challenge in the last few games after losing three straight league games. However they did show great resilience in the Les Phillips cup to beat Western Premier Barnstaple Town on penalties.

They couldn’t repeat another giant killing against Street just three days later in the Somerset Premier Cup going down 1-0 at home. So a league win will keep the Ks in the hunt for the top three finish which would be a marked improvement on the last few seasons.

Rugby

Bath Rugby travel to Exeter Chiefs on Sunday in a televised 1pm ko. After an indifferent season so far the coaching staff will be looking for a big league win this weekend to keep their supporters happy. Not yet in danger of being relegated the directors will know that Bath should be beating the likes of newly promoted Exeter. However it won’t be an easy trip as the Chiefs are flying the moment and currently sit in 2nd place.

Futsal

There is no fixture for Bath Futsal Club this weekend however manager Billy Whittaker is on the look out to improve his squad for next season. Following their 6-5 win away at Athletico Birmingham last Sunday Whittaker has set a target for his squad.

“I challenge these boys to work on their concentration, aggression, intensity for their defensive work between now and the end of the season. It’s something we are learning and working on every week.”

Bath are also well on their way of picking up maximum points from their last few games with just two games left to play. Last season Bath only managed 8 points, they have 15 already this season. So if you think you can help their improve again next season then get in touch with Whittaker here.

So there you have it, make sure you support your local teams this weekend or join a new club!
